Super Meat Boy Review - PlayStation Plus October 2015

Super Meat Boy

When you play Super Meat Boy, you get the remembrance of playing Super Mario Bros as a kid. (Frustrating, but still Fun)

This gaming platform directs itself down to pure running and jumping.

In order to beat each level, Meat Boy must must achieve the same objective, to reach Bandage Girl, who is mysteriously abducted by a man who looks freakishly similar to The Penguin from Batman.

Saving Bandage Girl is never an easy task with all the despicable, but humorous traps in the way.

One little touch from a saw, spike, or monster jaws and Meat Boy will splatter all over the trap, leaving a sorrowful reminder of your failure during your next attempt.

Even though you only have two ways of moving around the screen, the developers find intelligent ways to manipulate your surroundings to halt your progress onto the next level.

Precise Movement is the Key to a Good Start

In a game where your only two options of moving are running and jumping, you have to find clever ways to operate Meat Boy in order to reach the end of the level.

Finding the right feel for the way you move Meat Boy plays an important role on whether you make it to Bandage Girl, or end up in a splatter of food on the screen.

He has an extremely light feeling at times, as though he is defying gravity a bit.

Once you get the hang of the way Meat Boy moves, you'll be off through the levels in no time.

Timing is the Next Difficult Task

Image result for super meat boyFor a beginner, it's not an difficult problem to discover the way Meat Boy moves, but the timing you make on those moves.

As you progress through the levels, you'll notice that the game becomes demanding on when you click certain buttons and when you click those certain buttons.

This becomes freakishly annoying because, unfortunately for me, I can't do this, so I find myself thrown into a trap when I was, originally, trying to dodge another trap.

If you have great timing and precise movement, you will love the controls and mechanics for Super Meat Boy. (This is probably why I never really liked Super Mario Bros as much as others.)

No Checkpoints

Image result for super meat boySuper Meat Boy is a difficult game.

Make any slight mistake and you'll end up restarting from the very beginning of the level.

You might even die a hundred times in one level and still not reach the end.

Luckily, you have an unlimited number of lives, so once you get the hang of a level, it should be quite easy to complete.

As a reward for all your hard (and sometimes lucky) work, you get to watch a replay of all your previous attempts running at once (Several Meat Boys run across the screen all at the same time.)

This is extremely funny to watch because it reminds you of all the unbearable deaths that you had while trying to beat the game.

Mini Tip for Finding More Playable Characters

Image result for super meat boyHere is an excerpt (and tip) from an IGN reviewer on Super Meat Boy:

"Your first time through the game you'll be so laser focused on just completing each stage it's likely you'll miss the many secrets. There are warp zones that lead to secret areas where you might find new playable characters from recent indie games. Commander Video from the Bit.Trip series on Wii Ware is here as well as that kid from Braid. These guests have their own behaviors that might help you in a tight spot. Commander Video can float for a moment, for instance. You can usually switch to a new character on the fly unless you're fighting a boss. There are also precariously placed bandages to collect that can be spent to unlock even more characters. Meat Boy isn't in this alone."

Graphics

The Graphics for Super Meat Boy, in my opinion, were absolutely fantastic and for a game like this, I don't think they could have been any better.

Everything from the trail that Meat Boy leaves, to the spinning spikes of death make you either want to yell, laugh, and maybe even cry a little.

Overall, the Graphics made very humorous remarks and constantly reminded you about your numerous deaths.

    Replayability

Super Meat Boy has an epic amount of replayability because, for some reason, it compels you to want to try a certain level over and over again, until you eventually get it.

Once you make it to the end of the game, you feel accomplished, yet you don't want to play the game over once again.

Well, that is, unless you are trying to obtain all the bandages.

    Final Note

Overall, Super Meat Boy is an extreme, thrill driving, game that really toys with your emotions well.

Once you get into it, you don't want to stop, and this can be frustrating, laughable, or even make you want to cry.

Compared to other games, Super Meat Boy is the best in its genre at the moment, although I wouldn't really recommend paying 15$ for the game because it is not worth it, but if you are a die hard PlayStation Plus member, it is a great game to kill time with.

Once you get the hang of it, you won't ever want to stop.
